Cellulite (also known as “orange peel” or the “mattress” phenomenon) is often described as a condition where the skin looks uneven or dimpled. Any area of the body can be affected by cellulite but the areas most often affected by cellulite are the thighs, abdomen and buttocks. The condition is much more common in female than male. Normally, fat cells collect in compartments surrounded by connective tissue fibers under the outer layer of the skin. As a result of slower circulation, poor cell permeability, build up of cellular waste and obesity these compartments of fat cells get trapped and swollen, giving the appearance of “cottage cheese”. Some of the contributing factors for developing cellulite are: heredity, age, hormones, insufficient water intake, diet (alcohol, caffeine, insufficient fiber intake, etc.), smoking, lack of exercise and a sedentary lifestyle”.
