AGING FACE

An aging face goes through some gradual changes. With age, the number of the superficial skin cells decreases by about 10% per decade. Collagen production gradually slows down, resulting in a decrease of the skin thickness and firmness.  The skin is less able to retain moisture and to produce enough skin oil. All these changes make skin thinner, dryer, less elastic, and wrinkly.  The pigmented spots and the pore size increase as well as the amount of visible blood vessels (spider veins).  The fat pads of the eye sockets and the cheeks decrease, making eyes look sunken.  The skin around the eyes becomes thinner, wrinkly, and darker, forming dark circles and  “bags”.  The lips of an aging face get wrinkly and gradually “disappear”. Even the skull structure gradually changes creating the proportions similar to infant’s with bigger orbits and smaller jaw bones.   Due to all these changes, and decreased muscle tone, an aging face gets a droopy appearance, forming a double chin, saggy jowls, longer nose, wrinkles and folds.  Also, the amount of facial hair increases, especially on the chin and the lips.

Unprotected sun exposure, hormonal changes, smoking, pollution, and lack of sleep are the most important risk factors affecting an aging face.  Although it is impossible to reverse aging completely, there are many ways to prevent premature aging and to improve the appearance of  an aging face.  It is crucial to maintain a healthy life style, drink enough water, get enough sleep, quit smoking, and wear a sunscreen with SPF 30 or more for prevention.  For a long time face lift surgery was the only option to treat aging face.  Current aesthetic market offers many new choices for non-surgical, noninvasive corrections:

  • Skin products: Vitamin A (Tretinoin, Retin-A), alpha-hydroxy acids (glycolic and lactic), antioxidants (vitamins C and E), and moisturizers
  • Cosmetic procedures: facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and LED treatment
  • Pelleve skin tightening and Cavi-Lipo
  • Laser skin resurfacing and treatment: CO2, Pixel laser, and IPL
  • Botox (paralyzes some muscles, reducing wrinkles)
