UNDERARM SWEATING

Millions of people suffer from excessive sweating (Hyperhydrosis). Underarms, palms or soles are the most commonly affected areas but any area of the body can be affected. Symptoms usually get worse when one is emotionally stressed, anxious, physically active or when the body temperature increases. There is no increase in number of sweat glands in people affected but rather disproportional local increase in activity. Hyperhydrosis is not a disease but unfortunately, it can lead to significant social, professional and psycho-emotional problems.

Many treatments are available for Hyperhydrosis. Antiperspirants (like Aluminum chloride hexahydrate), iontophoresis or some oral medications can provide some relief but have to be performed daily or weekly and have limited use due to their side effects. In most severe cases some surgical procedures can be performed but they are associated with more severe complications.

Lately BOTOX® (Botulinum toxin type A) was FDA approved as a safe alternative for underarm excessive sweating. While mainly used for excessive sweating of the underarms, it may also be used to treat the palms, the soles and other areas. The procedure is very simple and includes several superficial intradermal injections. The effects are seen as soon as 48-72 hours and can last up to 6-7 months. The procedure is safe and well-tolerated.
