CO2 laser resurfacing treatment uses an ablation-type energy to generate heat and destroy old, damaged skin cells. This type of laser works by removing the outermost layer of skin (the epidermis) and heating the layer of skin below it (the dermis), stimulating the production of new collagen and promoting the growth of younger, firmer skin. CO2 laser resurfacing treatment is used to remove scars, blemishes, and wrinkles, improving the skin’s overall appearance. CO2 laser resurfacing treatment is a good option for skin conditions like acne, scars, sun-damage, aging skin, large pores, fine lines and wrinkles. Unlike traditional ablative laser which burns the entire top layer of skin, Fractional CO2 laser works by creating micro burns on the surface of the skin. The laser energy passes through a micro-lens that divides the laser beam into a pattern of pixel-sized micro beams. Each micro beam creates a micro burn surrounded by areas of unaffected tissue which allows faster healing.
Before the CO2 laser resurfacing procedure, you will need a local anesthetic for 45-60 minutes. If you have a history of cold sores, your doctor will most likely prescribe an antiviral medication to prevent an outbreak. A face treatment typically takes around 30 minutes. After the CO2 laser procedure is complete, your doctor will cover the area with a skin protectant such as Aquaphor. At home you will need to clean the treated area two to five times a day with a dilute saline or vinegar solution before applying a moisturizing skin protectant, and avoid using cosmetics or other skin products. Sun exposure should also be kept to a minimum and sunscreen should be used. Typical recovery after a CO2 laser skin resurfacing is around 7-10 days.
CO2 laser skin resurfacing is safe, but like any cosmetic procedure, CO2 laser resurfacing treatment has risks, such as burning sensation or pain, redness, swelling, infection, scarring, and skin tone changes (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation). The effects of CO2 laser treatments can be permanent for some skin conditions; however, the anti-aging effects of CO2 laser resurfacing are temporary. Nonetheless, your skin will improve in brightness and tone as it recovers. As your collagen grows and new layers of skin are regenerated, the positive effects will continue to appear, revealing a younger, more beautiful, you.
