Sculptra® is a unique treatment that stimulates collagen production, rather than just filling wrinkles. As its name suggests, Sculptra restores skin volume and creates lift to the face.
Sculptra also corrects the signs of facial fat loss and helps to achieve a more youthful and natural look. Sculptra is made of a synthetic material known as “poly-L-lactic acid” which has been widely used for many years for dissolvable stitches and soft tissue implants. This product is biocompatible and biodegradable.
Sculptra is not derived from any animal or human source and therefore requires no allergy testing prior to use. Sculptra was FDA approved in the U.S. for medical use since 2004 and for cosmetic use since 2009.
Sculptra is injected under the skin providing a gradual increase in the thickness of the skin and underlying tissue; this results in diminishing of the wrinkles by gradual reshaping and lifting of the face. The skin needs some time for natural collagen formation, therefore, the results are noticeable 4 to 6 weeks after the injection.
The injection involves only minimal discomfort due to the topical and premixed anesthetics. In general, Sculptra treatment is recommended to be repeated after a 3 to 6 week period so that collagen production continues. Two to four treatment sessions are usually required to achieve the desired effect, depending on the severity of volume loss and the age.
The effect can last up to two years. During your visit, the doctor will decide the appropriate amount of Sculptra you will need.
The most common unwanted effects of Sculptra injection include those associated with any injection procedures: temporary bruising, swelling, tenderness, redness, and infection. Sculptra should not be used around the lips and the eyes.
Delayed appearance of small nodules under skin is extremely rare in the hand of expert injector. Aspirin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, or fish oil supplements should be avoided prior to the procedure to prevent bruising. Patients with a history of cold sores may need anti-viral medication for prevention.
