ROSACEA
Rosacea is a skin disease that causes redness and bumps on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead, small visible blood vessels on the face and watery irritated eyes. It affects millions of people around the
world and is often left undiagnosed. Rosacea may have tremendous impact on people’s personal and social life and on their professional performance.
Rosacea tends to affect people, who have fair skin or blush easily. The disease may come and go with frequent acute episodes also called “flare-ups”. These flare-ups usually happen when
some “trigger factor” causes the blood vessels to expand and produce redness. Some common triggers are sun exposure, alcohol, spicy food, chocolate, exercise, stress, hot water and baths. In some cases
it is difficult to identify any specific trigger. If untreated, Rosacea can get progressively worse. In some rare cases Rosacea can cause bumps and enlarged blood vessels on the
nose giving the nose swollen, waxy or “strawberry-like” appearance; but only rare cases progress this far. |

Unfortunately, Rosacea can not be cured but it can be well controlled. Avoidance of the triggers can control the disease in some cases and prevent the flare-ups. Any person with Rosacea should avoid prolonged sun exposure and use a sunblock with SPF 30 or more. There are several treatment options available to keep the disease from getting worse.
- Topical creams or pills including antibiotics, glycolic acid, vitamins, tretinoin. Antibiotic pills may also help treat eye problems.
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).
- Surgery in some advanced cases.
