SPIDER VEINS - SCLEROTHERAPY
Unsightly veins are a problem for millions of men and women. According to their size these veins can be divided into 3 categories. Spider veins are the small red and purple veins
visible right under the skin surface. These are commonly found on the face, thigh, calves, ankles and behind the knees. Reticular veins are the larger, deeper bluish which often “feed”
the spider veins. Varicose Veins are the large blue veins that bulge up and have a twisted appearance. These are mostly found on the legs. None of these veins have any essential function.
The predisposing factors for enlarged veins include: heredity, hormones/pregnancy, prolonged standing, age and the skin type.
Sclerotherapy has been used in Europe for more than 50 years and involves simple injections of a sclerosing agent directly into the vessel to improve the appearance of the reticular and the
spider veins. There are several sclerosing solutions available for sclerotherapy (Sodium tetradecyl sulfate, Polidocanol, Hypertonic saline and some others). The injection of the sclerosing agent
will cause irritation and fibrosing of the unwanted vessel. After the sclerotherapy injection direct pressure applied to the area and the compression stockings or the elastic bandages should be worn for
some time for the best results. The body will then absorb the remnants of the veins in 4 to 8 weeks. On average, 2 to 4 treatments are usually required however, many will be treated with a single treatment.
